Emergence is the culmination of a year-long project that saw Jim Perkins pair his vocal score with Em Cooper’s oil paint animation. The work draws on both philosophical and psychoanalytic themes and takes as its central question: what is it to come up with an idea?

Emergence was screened and performed live by soprano Red Grey, at Turner Contemporary, Margate, in April 2012 as part of their first anniversary celebrations. A further live screening and performance of the piece was at The Vortex, London, in January 2013.

A fully animated version was completed in 2014 for film screenings, using the recorded version of the score.
